‘The
Great Brera’ was a project of some years ago that remained
disregarded. They wanted to turn the historic picture gallery into
a modern, lively, stimulating ,cultural centre in the ‘old’
rooms of the gallery and in the nearby Palazzo Citterio.
Unfortunately,
that good idea hasn’t been carried out yet, but even so, Brera
continues being great for the masterpieces of the painting of
every century , that we invite you to visit again.
Paintings
go from the Venetian School (Mantegna, Bellini, Tiziano, Veronese,
Tintoretto,Canaletto etc)to the Lombard School (Foppa, Bramantino,
Luini, the Campis, etc.), from Piero della Francesca , Raffaello
and Caravaggio ,up to the modern part with a selection of famous
19th century paintings ( ‘The Kiss’ by Hayez, ‘ Fiumana’
by Pelizza da Volpedo) and with the collection Jesy dedicated
to the 20th century.

Rediscover
one of the absolute masterpieces of art and the pride of Milan:
Leonardo’s Last Supper. Its original charm and its upsetting and
penetrating force have returned intact after the recent
restoration.
The
visit is not only for the knowledge of the fresco but it deals
with a wider analysis of Milan during the Renaissance.
It’
was of that period, Donato Bramante who worked in the building
sites of Santa Maria delle Grazie’s and of Santa Maria presso
San Satiro’s. For this last church , he created a false
perspective choir, that is a wonderful device.

The
Diocesan Museum is one of the great and rich museums of Milan. It
extends for more than two thousand square metres on the surface of
the recently restored cloisters, and of the St.Eustorgio’s
Basilica. In the interior of this area, there are a nearly unknown
artistic heritage of paintings, sculptures, vestments, altar
cloths and holy vessels coming from the Archbishop’s collections
and from the churches of the Diocese.
The
exhibition is charming and exalts the beauty and the value of the
works but also the spirituality they release.
The
most extraordinary works are the ‘Fondi Oro’, Tuscan and
Umbrian paintings of the 14th and 15th
centuries and some pieces coming from St.Ambrogio’s Basilica.
They are exposed at the beginning of the exhibition, emphasising
the importance of St.Ambrogio for the church of Milan and not only.

After
founding the Ambrosiana Library,
in 1618 ,Cardinal Federico Borromeo gave his valuable
paintings, drawings and prints ‘ ad
honorem Dei et cultura, publicamque utilitatem’. He created
one the most ancient examples of a modern museum opened to the
public and where written and figurative culture blend into a
global project. In the palace built by architect Mangone, there
are famous masterpieces (Raffaello, Leonardo, Tiziano, Caravaggio,
etc.), Some important pictorial schools and peculiar areas.
